German-Kazakh University Almaty (DKU)

The Kazakh-German University is located in Almaty, Kazakhstan and was founded in 1999 on the private initiative of the public foundation “Kazakh-German Educational Cooperation” with the goal of training specialists to a German standard. To this day, the DKU is the only German university in Kazakhstan and Central Asia.

In 2004 the university was successfully certified by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the German Academic Exchange Service, which confirms the high quality of education at the DKU. Three years later, in 2007, 20 first-year students began to study innovative specialties according to the German standard. This was preceded by a lot of work and the signing of an Agreement between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Ministry of Education and Science of Kazakhstan, which provides  intensive support for the DKU by both states.

In 2008, during a visit to the DKU by German Federal President Horst Köhler, an agreement was signed on close cooperation between Germany and Kazakhstan to improve the DKU infrastructure. Agreements were also reached with the Mittweide Graduate School, the Schmalkalden Graduate School and the Wildau Graduate School on mutual recognition of examination results together with the  opportunity for  students to receive bachelor's degrees in Germany and Kazakhstan. DKU continually improves its educational programs and expands opportunities for students so that their education at DKU is a solid foundation for building a successful career.

Bachelor students in the educational program "Energy and Environmental Engineering" and undergraduates in the educational program "Strategic Management of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency" (http://www.academic-waters.org/ru/ucheba/magistratura-vie/) take courses such as "Solar and Wind Energy Methods",  "Fuel Combustion and Biomass", "Advanced Renewable Energy Technologies", "Business Audit and Efficiency of Energy Systems", etc.

The Kazakh-German University has state-of-the-art laboratories that provide students with a wide range of practical skills.

The Renewable Energy Laboratory includes two demonstration units. The first is used to generate electrical energy from a set of solar (photovoltaic) panels. The second is thermal energy with water heating from a solar collector. In addition, the laboratory has monitoring equipment, software for the study of thermal energy systems and energy use and 3 suitcases for experiments in wind energy, solar energy and with fuel cells. A physical model of a "heat house" and a thermal imager are used to determine heat losses with different materials. On the roof of the university building there is a laboratory bench for measuring the generated power of photovoltaic modules, and a meteorological system. There is also  laboratory equipment to determine the most comfortable working conditions in the rooms.

In addition, within the framework of the "Solar Universities" program funded by the German Federal Foreign Office in Berlin, the installation of a photovoltaic system, on the roof of the Kazakh-German University, took place at the end of July 2021. This power plant has an installed capacity of up to 1 kWp, the configuration includes photovoltaic modules, two batteries, an inverter, a charge controller and a monitoring system that provides real-time data on the operation of the plant for use in lectures, seminars or laboratory work online with the ability for the data to be retrieved at any time. The installation of the photovoltaic systems was done by the Kazakhstan company ECO NRG, which will also take care of the maintenance of the two systems (https://enabling-pv.ru/publications/news/34).

A laboratory for electrical engineering, based on a multimodal computer learning system, allows for work on digital signal processing, electrical engineering, electronics, automatic control theory and computer science, the study of power sources, and the basics of measurement and communication technology.

There is also a laboratory for physics, environmental chemistry, digital technology, and applied research (for more information: https://dku.kz/ru/content/view/?slug=laboratorii&tab=0
