Solar systems on Heidelberg schools

The State Office for Environmental Protection, Trade Inspection and Energy in Baden-Württemberg, the City of Heidelberg's Building Management and Heidelberg's public utility company have installed photovoltaic systems and solar thermal systems on the roofs of several Heidelberg schools. The roof, or facade, of several elementary schools, secondary schools, high schools, and vocational schools are being used to generate hot water or electricity using solar energy. At the Albert Schweitzer School in Heidelberg, the photovoltaic system reaches a power peak of 1.06 kilowatts and at the Kurpfalz School even 18.6 kilowatts.

The solar systems are also integrated into science lessons to give students a clear understanding of environmental protection. Many Heidelberg vocational schools have also participated in solar boat competitions where students build solar boats from old diesel-powered boats.
