IEA forecasts 4800 gigawatts total capacity from renewables in 2026
In 2021, the capacity of newly installed renewable energy systems rose more strongly than ever before. The International Energy Agency (IEA) calculated 290 gigawatts of newly installed capacity, as it announced last week in its report "Renewables 2021 – Analysis and forecasts to 2026". For photovoltaics, global growth was 17 percent, year-on-year, at 160 gigawatts.
"This year's record renewable energy growth of 290 gigawatts is another sign that a new global energy economy is emerging," said Fatih Birol, executive director of the IEA. (pv-magazine)
By 2026, the IEA expects a significant increase in renewable capacity of more than 60 percent compared to 2020, with about half covered by photovoltaics. It is estimated that 4800 gigawatts of renewable capacity will be installed worldwide by 2026.
