More than 100 countries pledge to protect forests

At the COP26 International Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, more than 100 countries pledged to stop deforestation by 2030. Those countries with the world's largest forest areas – Brazil, Canada, Russia, Colombia and China – also pledged to comply with the agreement. To this end, the states intend to provide 12 billion U.S. dollars, with a further 7.2 billion U.S. dollars to be added from private funds. The preservation of forests is essential for the sequestration of CO2 and for the protection of biodiversity.

Other topics discussed during the first 3 days of COP26 were the reduction of methane emissions and the implementation of so-called "green grids." In this project, which has been joined by India and Great Britain as well as the USA and Germany among others, green electricity is to be distributed better and across national borders in the future. Remote areas should also be given the opportunity to produce their own electricity through autonomous systems.
